Like so many other Americans, and elsewhere, I own an Apple iPhone. I love my iPhone. I’d be lying if I told you otherwise. It lets me carry one device instead of 3 (phone, ipod & handheld game system). My older sister ‘s husband, Chuck  just got an iPhone. I told him the app I was using for (semi) free texting (had to buy the app and sub) and then I went WAITAMINUTE! I remembered seeing a Tweet just the other day by a fellow webcomic artist that Google released a Voice app. I wasn’t sure what this was. I got around to checking out the Top 25 FREE apps in the iTunes Store, and it was there. Still I was like what’s Voice.

So, I decided to check out Voice. I use almost everything else Google has out, why not another one?

Google Voice is pretty much what it sounds like. One number for all your phones, online voicemail and cheap calling. This includes texting. So I go through the registration. You get to pick your own number. I told it to search, trying to match my existing number, so it was easier for people to remember. After that, you choose a PIN, then you enter your existing phone number. Next it gives you a 2 digit number, tells you it’s going to call your phone for you to verify it’s your phone and all that. Then you are good to go.

Now, in order to avoid being charged for getting a text at your Voice number, you need to go into the Settings and UNCHECK your cell phone number, or if you used a land line, un-check that. Next, if you haven’t downloaded the app, go get it. Open it up, log in, and that’s all there is to it. Go ahead and tell your friends to text you at your Google Voice number and it’ll arrive in the app. No more paying for texting.  Since you have an iPhone, I know you are already paying $30 for the data plan, plus the minutes plan, and like many people, probably even pay for the texting plans.

Some things of note. If you are in the Voice App and get an incoming text, you’ll get a pop-up, but no sound. If you are in any other App, or just at the homescreen, or the phone is locked, you’ll get the Tri-tone sound and a pop-up.  Be patient with the App. There are some negative reviews on the App Store for it. It’s the first version of the App. I’ve not experienced any of the problems people were complaining about. I have a 3GS with the iOS up to date. It got a little weird on me at dinner tonight, both my younger brother and sister were tag texting me, and I was playing a game as well, XD But it was certainly not something I could give a bad review over.

I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. Let me choose the text-tone and you get your 5th star Google. XD
